Finalizing v1.7 #60

This PR finalizes v1.7 by merging dev to main. See PR #59 for staging.

There's a glitch here where commits from the previous release are also showing up as part of this PR, and introducing merge conflicts. I'm thinking it's because we did too much "squash and merge". Better to do a normal merge when bringing dev into main?
