Thanks, ha0ye. I looked at the Carpentries website to try to find more information about the Carpentries Member Council (CMC), but I had no luck. Besides mentioning that members have a seat on the CMC, there does not seem to be anything else about it on the website, including in the Carpentries bylaws. So I have no idea what responsibilities a board representative to the CMC might actually have (if any!).
Hello! the CMC is a very informal group at this point. The formal language in the agreement aligns more with what the SWC steering committee envisioned for the council, and we have left the language as it is because it speaks to admins/decision makers at some organisations more as a benefit of membership, allowing community members to make a better case to support The Carpentries.
Currently, the Member Organisation Council meets once a quarter. We just met last month, and I will shortly be releasing a blog post (the first ever!) on this meeting. In it I will announce the days and times of the next meeting (late September). We are currently inviting anyone who is active in their local community through membership, who has thoughts on their membership, or who has a stake in the membership to attend. We generally open up with updates from The Carpentries and a short presentation including developments of special interest to Member Organisations. Then we have a discussion. Feedback has definitely been that this discussion is the most valuable part of the meeting (so we devote the longest time to it), since member organisation representatives have the opportuntity to share solutions and challenges with each other, network, etc...
So, feel free to designate someone to attend these meetings, or send as many people as are interested!
Funding for renewal is taken care of.
We require a member contact to facilitate or pass on information between The Carpentries and our group.
We also receive a seat on "The Carpentries Member Organisation Council", and probably should designate someone on the board to do so (or act as a proxy for the board).
