Geospatial workshop: Who is teach each section? #67

@josephaandreoli @gklarenberg @MarconiS @picardis @KristinaRiemer

Thank you all for volunteering to instructor the upcoming geospatial workshop! It's going to be an interesting experience. We need to figure out which of you will lead each section, the main lesson will certainly need to be broken up into multiple instructors.

Let's try to work through the full workshop independently, and then decide who will lead each section by Monday (Oct. 15).

justinmillar commented 5 years ago

I also think that it would be valuable to try to set up a time to meet up once everyone has gone through the material. Would each of you be open to this?

MarconiS commented 5 years ago

Hi Justin, Great catch! Sure! I am more than happy to meet any time from the 15th on! Am super excited about this workshop!

Have you all a bright day!

I think meeting will be a great idea after going through the material independently. Would the Monday before the conference be too late to meet? Maybe the 19th instead?

I think it would be great to meet on Monday 22, mainly because that way I'd be able to be there in person. Otherwise, I can do remotely too - but next week I'm in the field until the 17, so maybe the 18 or 19?

KristinaRiemer commented 5 years ago

We could have two meetings? I'll also only be able to be there in person the day before the workshop.

MarconiS commented 5 years ago

So, are we meeting on the 19, on the 22, or both?

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

I vote to meet in person on the 22nd. I'm available pretty much all day except 11 am - 12 pm. We should decide in advance who should do what though so we can all prep and have a good discussion. Wednesday is not ideal for teaching for me since I have a 11.45 am - 12.45 seminar (I am presenting) - which is kind of in the middle of everything. I'll be there for helping though. So I'd like to teach Tuesday. @justinmillar are you going to do the introduction slides etc on Day 1?

KristinaRiemer commented 5 years ago

I agree with deciding soon on who's teaching what. I'm happy to teach any of the material. Are you planning on teaching @justinmillar?

justinmillar commented 5 years ago

OK, it sounds like Monday Oct 22 is the best time for everyone. Please fill out your availability here https://www.when2meet.com/?7209297-rx1jE.

I will be giving a brief introductions with slides on Day 1. Also, I was not planning on teaching, I'm hoping to primarily serve as a helper and to take detailed notes to help improve future workshops.

picardis commented 5 years ago

I'm also fine with teaching any of the material!

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

I'm going to call dibs on Tuesday morning considering my earlier mentioned issues with Wednesday, and I have been asked to be at a seminar at 2 pm on Tuesday

MarconiS commented 5 years ago

Am ok with any time. Maybe Wednesday either morning or afternoon?

josephaandreoli commented 5 years ago

I'd like to teach Tuesday afternoon, preferably between lessons 1 and 7 of Intro to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R. As we get further and further with ggplot() I grow less confident teaching the material. I can also do lessons 1 through 5 of Intro to R.

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

How about the schedule below, purely based on the time indicated with the curriculum? If everyone agrees, we should also put these times on the workshop site - and email this to people. I tried to make some extra time at the end of day 1 and the beginning of day 2 to deal with setup problems and give people a bit of a breather.

TUESDAY 9-10.30 Intro to R, lessons 1, 2, 3, 4 (1.5 hrs) Geraldine 10.45-12.30 Intro to R, lessons 5, 6 (1 hr 45 minutes) Geraldine & Joe 12.30-1.30 lunch (1 hours) 1.30 - 3.00 Intro to R, lessons 7, 8, Intro to Geospatial concepts, lesson 1 (1.5 hrs) Joe 3.15 - 4.45 Geospatial concepts, lessons 2, 3, 4, Introduction to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R, get set up + lessons 1 (1.5 hrs) Kristina Evaluation - end by 5 pm WEDNESDAY 9-9.30 recap from previous day (30 minutes) Geraldine, Joe, whoever wants to 9.30-10.30 Introduction to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R, lessons 2, 3, 4 (1 hr) Kristina 10.45-12.30 Introduction to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R, lessons 5, 6, 7, part 8 (1 hr 45 min) Simona 12.30-1.30 lunch 1.30- 3.00 Introduction to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R, lessons part 8, 9, 10 (1.5 hr) Simona & Sergio 3.00 - 4.15 Introduction to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R, lessons part 11, 12, 13, 14 (1 hr 15 minutes) Sergio Evaluation - end by 4.30 pm

MarconiS commented 5 years ago

works fine to me!

josephaandreoli commented 5 years ago

Hey Geraldine, thanks for posting this schedule. See you Monday

KristinaRiemer commented 5 years ago

Looks good to me too.

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

As for meeting Monday, seems like everyone can make it between 2 and 5 pm. How about 2 pm? Does anyone have access to the UFII room schedule to see if the meeting room is available?

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

Hi all - we're meeting at 2 pm in the large room at UFII (the lecture room). G

josephaandreoli commented 5 years ago

Hey @justinmillar , do we need the timings for each lesson to report back to The Carpentries? I'm currently handling the etherpad and can take a note of what time we start each lesson which someone else can continue when I teach.

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

Hey all - I think things went pretty well. Great job! I'm curious to see comments (had to leave today) - we should try and find a time to debrief and talk. ALSO can someone grab the R-Ladies stickers that I left in the table, and bring them to the next meeting? Thanks!

KristinaRiemer commented 5 years ago

@gklarenberg we were talking about discussing the workshop at the meeting in three weeks (because Justin won't be there next week).

josephaandreoli commented 5 years ago

Maybe @justinmillar could pass on the minute cards to @gklarenberg in the meantime?

justinmillar commented 5 years ago

Thanks again everyone for all the work you put in, the workshop went over really, really great in my opinion! I made private repo containing my notes and some other documents (including minute card responses), you all should have access.

I think it's worthwhile for us to compile all of our thoughts and responses, but put together a blog post for the Data Carpentry site. Please feel free to add, either on the repo or via email. I'll shoot to have a draft together in a week.

picardis commented 5 years ago

Notes look great. Thanks Justin!

gklarenberg commented 5 years ago

I think the notes look great as well! If we could add the results from the separate survey to the repo, I think it's ready to be sent to Erin.

justinmillar commented 5 years ago

I've added the data from our survey and updated the notes, does anyone want to take a shot at some NLP with the minute card data?
