I have uf-carpentry.org and ufcarpentry.org. Which one do you want to use? To hook it up add a file named CNAME that contains nothing but the name you want to serve the site under eg "www.ufcarpentry.org".
I like uf-carpentry.org because the URL is easier to read, but we can have both direct to the same site, right?
In looking at this a bit more, using a custom domain w/ Github pages will change all the URLs for the other repositories we have for workshops. I also need to deal with the multiple names outside Github and my low-cost name registrar doesn't offer that redirection service for free.
I may end up setting up a web server w/ Jekyll on it to pull from this repo and host the site in the ACIS lab instead. I'll work on it this weekend.
My understanding is that if we use netlify, we would turn off GitHub pages for the website repo, and netlify would build and host the site from that particular repo, so it wouldn’t affect the workshop sites which exist in other repos.
@justinmillar any thoughts?
@ha0ye @mjcollin This is my understanding as well. We would point Netlify to the UF-Carpentry/website repo to construct the site, and on the 'Events' sections our links will direct to the individual workshop repos (i.e. they will be external links outside of the unique UF-Carpentry/website domain).
@mjcollin
I can do that but I'd prefer just to create a record for "www" and "@" for just the IP addresses that are their web servers.
NM, found the docs, will do tonight: https://www.netlify.com/docs/custom-domains/
Made records for both ufcarpentry.org and uf-carpentry.org with and without www. Their guidance is to use www.... so their CDN network works. Final answer:
@mjcollin has some URLs reserved for us to use.
