Search by Purpose #6

Open StephMills opened 4 years ago

The webmap currently allows to search by sample type (core, cuttings, etc); can we add an option to search or display by geology type, e.g. mining, oil and gas, etc (and have them in different colors)? In the xlsx I have of the UCRC inventory there is a "purpose" field that has the appropriate information. I don't know if "geology type" is the best way to frame the option, open to other wordings. Let me know if you need any other information.

What could be good is to have points colored by purpose and sized/shaped by sample type? Or do you think that would look too busy?

Vandenberg5 commented 4 years ago

Yes, we have discussed this in the past, but it has not been implemented due to technical capabilities... I would like to see the initial map have different color dots for cores and cuttings. I would also like to see an option to sort by purpose (e.g., oil/gas, oil shale, tar sands, metals, potash, water, stratigraphic, etc.). I am not a fan of the current "filter by sample type" function; often i wan to see which wells have cores and which nearby wells have cuttings, there is no way to do that now since every dot is either on or off or all the same color.

Agreed. My choice would be to have purpose (oil/gas, metals, IM, etc) by color, since there are more of them and color is easiest to differentiate, and sample type by shape, since there are only 3 options (core, cuttings, other). But we can discuss as a group if that doesn't work for everyone. If we do this with symbology there shouldn't be a need for multiple filter options, people can just turn things off and on? Or is that not possible for classes within a layer, e.g. can turn off/on "purpose", but not "metals" specifically?

Sounds good to me, color for purpose and shape for type (core, cuttings, other). it would be handy to turn them on and off (both types of distinictions.

Let's look into this again and see if we can move past the technical capabilities we ran into last time. @jjhi11, do you remember why this didn't work last time?

The title of this issue should be Search by Purpose, but i don't know how to change it

marthajensen commented 4 years ago

I changed the title Mike. I'm not sure if your page shows it, but my page shows an "edit" button to the right of the title

Vandenberg5 commented 4 years ago

since i did not open the issue, there was no edit button for me
