TidyTuesday Commentary- Week 07

Code/Tools/Approaches we have seen in class:

Some similar features and/or code that is relatively new

Code/Tools/Approaches not seen within class:

Some things I’ve never heard of or sound cool;

Data visualizations that were enjoyed:

  1. I thought this plot by @danoehm was okay. I liked how he compared the differences in distribution between the Western States and Hardrock 100 in a simply but easily interpreted way. I otherwise disliked his method of delivering the legends and such data.
  2. I really liked this figure by @G_abgrall. I thought the subtitle write up was just enough, and his graphics are amazing. I liked the literal mountain reference in his left figure and the colour aesthetics. I also think he added a running man graphic on top of this plot? Super pretty and super interesting, I’d love to learn how to make the left figure as it would especially be useful for algal community compositions.

Data visualizations for improvement:

  1. Perhaps most gganimate plots are no longer for me… This bar plot by @BIRASAFABRICE was not beloved by me. I found the changes in bars disappearing and/or reappearing too distracting, and I have to watch the graphic quite a few times in order to understand the data. I would suggest changing the style of plot from an animation to a stable one, albeit I retract the suggestion I was going to make. Anyone else have a better idea on how to change this?
  2. Nothing really technically wrong with this bar graph by @KyleWhoIsTall, just super boring. A little colour and flare would go a long way, so I would add some more aesthetically pleasing touches to this: gradient colour fills across countries, title colours, some background spice.
  3. This figure by @datasciencejenn was okay. I liked the font. My biggest bone to pick was with the legend of where each race was held. It was impossible to tell based off of pattern what each country was. Were most races held in Sweden or in the United States?? Hard to tell. Definitely change this.
