Advertising/recruiting learners #7

What is the next step in our process for sending out the workshop info?

Who wants to claim each of these/do we need to resolve the branding issue you've mentioned prior to doing this? The language sounds fine to me, but I don't think I'm a good person to decide given that I have not been involved in previous conversations on the subject. @bsmith89 etc :)

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

I'm ready to advertise.

Let's start listing folks to advertise to on this thread and then we can send emails or ask our contacts to do so.

Optimally we'd start advertising today. Is that feasible?

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

MCommunity lists that I know would be interested:

celticelk commented 7 years ago

Before we advertise, we should probably have registration set up, which requires a final version of the description. I'm at home sick today, so I haven't been keeping up with all of the threads - is this ready to go?

What form should that description take? Are the blurb and syllabus from the website enough?

aerenchyma commented 7 years ago

Also ready, pending all this, ^?

Additional possible lists: umsi.all.open (overall School of Information list) sphd-inbox (SPH phd) hi.students.certificate (students working on health informatics certificate)

Possibly a linguistics listserv as well

Registration is up: http://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/introduction-to-python-and-the-jupyter-notebook/

Awesome. We should send this out today. I figure we'll want to write up a single email to send around.

Do you guys think we need any more of a blurb for the email, or can we just copy the paragraph from the registration page? Any customization of the ad for different programs?

aerenchyma commented 7 years ago

I think we can copy the paragraph from the registration page, but happy customizing if you all think we should. How about:

Subject: Intro. Python & Data Analysis Workshop, Dec 14-15

The University of Michigan Teaching and Technology Collaborative is offering an introductory Python and Data Analysis workshop, sponsored by the University of Michigan Library, December 14th and 15th! Register here: http://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/introduction-to-python-and-the-jupyter-notebook/

This workshop will present some basic techniques in working with the Python programming language and the Jupyter Notebook (http://jupyter.org) for data analysis. Topics covered will include: using libraries, working with arrays, reading and plotting data, creating and using functions, loops and conditionals, and defensive programming (making programs you write robust and useful for yourself and others). No prior Python experience is expected. Prior familiarity with some formal language or statistical program may be useful, but is not necessary!

Time & Date: December 14 8:30 am - 12:30 PM, December 15 8:30 am - 12:30 PM Location: Furstenburg (Med Sci II, 2nd floor), Room 2754 Medical Sciences Building 2 / 1137 Catherine Street, Medical Campus Free!

Join us!

Totally fine with any edits/changes/etc.

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

Great! Thoughts @celticelk ?

I haven't heard the title "The University of Michigan Teaching and Technology Collaborative" before. Is that what we're calling the SWC group, now?

aerenchyma commented 7 years ago

I just borrowed it from that link, not sure if that's what we should use. :)

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

Oh! I think that's just the title of the group whose registration system we're using. I'd go with "University of Michigan Software Carpentry" as our title, although I think our "club" needs a better name.

Also, I'll add the registration link to the workshop site, and then I think we should send out the workshop site in this email instead. Using that as a centralized location for all w.s. info seems wize.

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

*wise

Registration link is on the website. Besides changing that first sentence, this draft email looks good to me.

aerenchyma commented 7 years ago

OK! Sounds good to me. Here's an edited version for easy copy:

@celticelk is that "sponsored by the library" important/accurate? I don't know what our definition of sponsored is...?

aerenchyma commented 7 years ago

Ah, good point -- again, just copied from the registration link, not coming from any other knowledge. May as well leave it out since it's on the website.

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

No worries. As far as I know this w.s. is official "sponsored" by UMSWC, although Scott's time may be considered co-sponsorship by the library.

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

I get the impression that we're ready to send this out (and Scott may have already?). Unless one of you tells me otherwise, I'll take all of the MCommunity groups that I initially listed above.

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

We're full! I expect plenty of no-shows, though, so filling the waitlist and getting people to drop officially if they can't make it will be very important.

@celticelk, is there some way to indicate that waitlisted learners will most likely be able to attend, and encourage people to continue registering?

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

@aerenchyma have you sent the ad to the lists that you suggested above?

Also ready, pending all this, ^?

bsmith89 commented 7 years ago

I don't expect much additional registration.
