I was at University of Michigan Ann Arbor this week and saw some stuff UNH may want to consider. One was these lengthwise strings of floats at the tank edges. You can see blue ones in the photo below, but they also had some larger ones.

Their beach was also simply an angled piece of fiberglass grating, with a slope similar to a real beach.
