Soil Moisture Data Sets: Overview & Comparison Tables

brettpalmberg commented 2 years ago

Hello @FHanbali . I think we have a blocker 🚫 on this task related to data access. Can you help unstick this?

adamscarberry commented 2 years ago

Too many links and products to sift through. I'm leaning towards the SMAP products, but I need more eyes on this decision.

Thanks @adamscarberry, looping-in @FHanbali. I think we need additional information on which specific products are to be added to Cumulus (specific links, products, bands, etc.). Stay tuned, email sent.

I'm setting the 🛑Blocked tag pending additional information.

@FHanbali We need to get more resolution on what actually we want to pull from this dataset, essentially we need to figure out who has the need, what that need is, and get it a little more fleshed out.

Notes from HEC Cumulus:

This task results in the addition of "NLDAS" and "SMAP" Soil Moisture datasets to Cumulus, described in existing issue https://github.com/USACE/cumulus/issues/31. The soil moisture datasets are vast, having many "bands" representing different parameters and soil layers. This task will focus on bands discussed in the document "Hydrologic Studies - Soil Moisture Applications for Hydrologic Modeling" completed by the Omaha District Hydrology Section 9/27/2018 and guidance provided by Joshua Melliger (USACE) via email in August 2022. Fist step will be to load historic archive into Cumulus. Second step will be to research automated download capabilities. Third step will be to implement near real-time data acquisition and ingest into the Cumulus system. Specifically, the following products will be added to Cumulus:

NLDAS-NOAH Model Output "Total Soil Moisture" Parameter (6 Bands):

Looked into the SMAP data more. There are 4 levels. Level 2 has data from a single pass. Level three has combined data from a single day and level 4 incorporates modeling to fill in gaps in the data. Issues with the data sets.
Level 3 data https://nsidc.org/data/spl3smp_e/versions/5 Level 3 data has large gaps as it only includes data from the satellite pass that day. It does have two runs an AM and PM but combined there are still data gaps. Data is available for previous day. So on 8/25/2023 data is available for 8/24/2023

Level 4 data https://nsidc.org/data/spl4smgp/versions/7 Level 4 data is available 3 days in the past so on 8/25/2023 data is avaiable for 8/22/2023. but it provides an entire coverage

I believe that Level 4 data would be most useful and will start to gather that information.
