In a file such as "Drew/d/EFR phyto 8-23-2011 (2).xls"; do we want totals as summarized in the bottom of each sheet or the rows (from which one could calculate totals?

Definitely the rows. Specifically the data in columns B, D and G. We'll assign a 'Class' to each 'Genus species' in column B, then aggregate by lake, sampling station, date, sampling depth, and Class.
