🐛: [Bug Fixes] WhatsApp Chat Analyzer: Layout Optimization, Emoji Handling, Time Conversion, and Performance Enhancements

Title

When I was going through new projects addition, Whatsapp chat analyzer caught my attention, however the code seems to have few inconveniences inside the main.py file. I would like to point them out and fix them.

Bug

Few bugs that I think are fault code in the main web app file:-

• Sequential layout makes the app hard to read.
• twelve_hr_convert() is unnecessarily complex.
• Multiple regex patterns for time/date.
• Use of apply() slows down large datasets.
• Incorrect emoji extraction method.
• Separate operations for date and time conversion.
• Unwanted caching of data with @st.cache_data.
• Media messages and multi-line texts not handled well.
• WordCloud performance slows with large data.
• Basic visuals with minimal interactivity.
• Lack of comments and unclear variable names.
• Incomplete error handling in file extraction.

Changes

💡 My approach to fix the above bugs:-

• Use st.columns() or st.expander() to structure the app better.
• Simplify twelve_hr_convert() using the datetime module.
• Combine the regex patterns into a single regex with optional groups.
• Use vectorized Pandas methods like str.len() and str.split().
• Replace emoji extraction with emoji.emoji_list() for accuracy.
• Use pd.to_datetime() for combined date-time parsing.
• Implement cache timeout (ttl) or conditionally invalidate the cache.
• Enhance message filtering and parsing to handle special cases.
• Preprocess text data and limit WordCloud input size.
• Use update_layout() and update_traces() for better visuals.
• Add comments, docstrings, and improve variable naming.
• Add detailed error handling for unexpected input.
• These fixes will resolve the corresponding bugs!
