@tijmenbaarda or @lukavdplas, a large chunk of this task is upgrading Django all the way from version 1.11 to the latest LTS that supports Python 3.8 (probably 3.2, but possibly 4.x). This is somewhat time-consuming work, but does not require you to be a VRE expert. It can be done as soon as #126 is merged, because then you can use the backend tests as an additional check that nothing has been broken by your changes (in addition to python manage.py check
).
The process of upgrading Django is documented in detail here. Please assign yourself if/when you find time to take it on.
