Need a more exploratory focus...

macrostrat.org/map (the one that used to work!) is a great starting point here. Think PBDB Navigator. Explore by time, animate (i know you don't like this), and filter. Get URL, etc. Navigator is a great model.

jczaplew commented 9 years ago

I was thinking very different from Navigator...more dashboard-ish. The issue with Navigator is that it is terrible for browsing/discovery. If I'm not a paleontologist and I end up there, it doesn't tell me anything.

One component I really like of the current macrostrat.org is the random section - I think that is a great way to introduce people to the data, and keep them coming back. Other things like summary stats (total units, lithology, etc...), and perhaps stats like "unit with most occurrences" or "unit with the most carbonate".

Thoughts?

And macrostrat.org/map definitely works....in Chrome!

cambro commented 9 years ago

Agreed on a lot of this. As you know I'm a big fan of the random changing landing page. It promotes interest and a sense of dynamic content which is what we have in most of these resources. Pbdb doesn't do this very well right now. We could, however make navigator enter a random state on load. Global paleogeography with taxon filter or something.

But, it is also true that I want to build something of use and interest to geo-motivated or geo-aware users. I don't want to impress cousin eddy.

I think we should pick about 12 columns that have good mapping to burwell and make column burwell map the focal point instead of a static photo.

jczaplew commented 8 years ago

I like that idea. Want to pick a dozen and I can handle the rest?

col_id: 495 {NB: the mesaverde polygon (36.2443, -110.3247), in sift burwell view, is still missing implying no matches; however, it does have match (Fm names matched to the polygon Gp name)} 144 474 486 78 434 521 488 1472 1643 137 P.S. This would have been way easier with random column access via a map-based interface to sift! ;-P

301 and 431 are pretty cool too!

landing page is now totally awesome. maybe tighten buffer around stats?
