Fix consistency, grammar, and usage in user guide #154

The user guide is terrific. Here are multiple edits to fix grammar and spelling errors, and improve usage, consistency, and readability.

The grammar and spelling errors are cut-and-dry and should be fixed. The rest are judgment calls, although they come from a knowledgeable first-time reader of the manual, who may have a good perspective on how to improve it.

If you'd rather keep the former and leave the latter for another time, let me know and I'll separate them out into different commits and come back.

Thank you for these fixes and improvements! I have had a quick look through the changes, and I do agree that they make the documentation better.

Could you squash the two commits into a single commit?
