Battering Ram too weak #607

Hey guys,

The Battering Ram isn´t very cost-effective at the moment. It´s way to weak against enemy missile attack. Usually they don´t deal a lot of damage or even reach the walls before being shut down by archers. Catapults usually deal a lot more damage AND are cheaper to build.

This shouldn't be fixed by greatly increasing their hitpoints as then they would be overpowered by being even unstoppable by meele units (which should be the weak spot of every siege equipment), but by increasing their resistance against arrows.

I think and hope this shouldn´t be a big deal to change, but it would revive an entire existing unit which isn´t used solely due to failed balancing

absolutely agreed, ram is killed in few arrow/crossbow volleys and its just wierd, how can you destroy wooden box on wheels with arrows?

Siege equipmnets are way more resiliant to arrows than to melee units. Melee units destroy catapults in a matter of seconds (depending on game speed ofc), while it requires lots of arrows to destroy them. I agree though that they should be more resiliant towards arrows. They could be even stronger destroying gates and especially walls imo.

I use rams all the time to great effect. The issue is not the weakness of rams, but the strength of catapults imo.

I like your idea making them stronger against arrows would be nice, but at the same time they should be slowed down to the speed of ballistae because I also have to agree with GRhin, I don't think rams are weak either. They do really strong damage against walls and gatehouses without killing your units like catapults do. If your enemy builded up every space of the gatehouse with walls exept for its entrence, normal units would take really long time to take it down. Rams need two hits to completely destroy one part of a wall and deal great damage against gates. Catapults need many more shots since they don't hit always at the same place, they may hit your units and their shots cost you stone/ money.
