https://dataforgood.facebook.com/dfg/tools/high-resolution-population-density-maps The raster output doesn't look great in urban areas.
Columbia University’s Center for International Earth Science Information Network found all the census data. https://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/downloads/docs/gpw-v4/gpw-v4-country-level-summary-rev11.xlsx is fantastic; is all that cleaned-up data available anywhere? (Step 2 of https://dataforgood.facebook.com/dfg/docs/methodology-high-resolution-population-density-maps). Helpful links; I actually found Ireland's OA shapefile at https://www.nisra.gov.uk/publications/small-area-boundaries-gis-format from this.
https://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/mapping/popest/covid-19/ has a population estimate tool
https://populationexplorer.org is a pretty fantastic frontend
Until I start that project, dumping notes here
