Gatsby.js is the latest hotness in static site generators. I built my current website with it using a starter, and am currently in the process of starting a new version from scratch. Gatsby.js is based off of React and what makes it compelling is its use of GraphQL within the framework itself and also to speak with backends, in particular a headless CMS like headless WordPress, which is I'm working on building right now.
