update-engine is garbage. bug #1 #15

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install any app that discreetly REQUIRES update-engine
2. Wait for gayness
3. No long own your computer

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I should decide when I want to update my software? What if I dont want to have
software
downloading updates in the background? What if I don't want what you think is
the 'new' and
'improved' version. What if I'm on an expensive connection?

Instead what happens is Google dicks me around

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Leopard 10.5.6

Please provide any additional information below.
This is bullshit, Google. Its Evil.

While the language in the report is, um, quite to the point, I wholeheartedly
agree
with the substance: You shall never install or update software on my machine
without
me taking the initiative. Consequently, any such software from you, Google,
shall
never be on my machine.

Thus, maybe no more Google Earth for me. And good riddance. As the original
poster
wrote, it's evil.

I agree that someone should rename the bug. The idea is the updater shouldn't
be a
service, it should able to be run manually or by the crontab but NOT always.
