Decide about name suffixes for OCLC DCG harvest and standardize authors to that form (206 items) #717

OCLC Digital Collection (DCG) harvests names as displayed in VTechWorks, e.g. Reichert, Brian Anthony Jr. in http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35884 for the MARC record. But names are displayed in WorldCat Item View and WorldCat Search View as FirstName LastName, e.g. Brian Anthony Jr Reichert.

Two possible options:

  1. Leave our records as they are and have the names with suffixes look bad in WorldCat but ok in DSpace and the MARC record. As @gailmmac noted, this will also allow names to sort correctly in DSpace.

  2. Change all the names to LastNameIncludingSuffix, FirstName. If we do this, we should probably also change our submission form instructions to use this form. Instead of instructing:

Last name, e.g., Kennedy and First name(s) + initial(s), e.g., John F. Jr.,

we would instruct,

Last name, e.g., Kennedy Jr. and First name(s) + initial(s), e.g., John F.

For comparison, the DSpace default is

Last name, e.g. Smith and First name(s) + "Jr", e.g. Donald Jr

OCLC Personal Names--General Information- For a MARC record,

So the full inverted name in MARC displays as Kennedy, John F., Jr.

An example of the display of such a name in WorldCat is https://virginiatech.on.worldcat.org/oclc/742802799, by Harry Connick (Composer) (Lyricist) (Performer) Jr.

We don't have a way of adding separately the suffix in DCG.

In the ETD author names:

Some of these names need correcting to the desired form.

@pyc1 and I discussed the issue and decided to leave the names in the standard DSpace form: LastName, FirstName MI. Suffix.

I search for and standardized (I can't bring myself to say corrected) the form of all the dc.contributor.author names with suffixes:

Hmm, there are other ETDs that are appearing in WorldCat Item View with the author name inverted. That certainly helps.
