Add combustion engines of different tiers like diamond, gold, iron...
The more motors you add the faster the ship will go.
Block climbers would be a simple block you put in any place in the ship that will teleport it one block up once is about to collide with a 1 block tall wall just like horses and other ridable creatures work, this could finally allow land ships.
