The nvidia card i use is a GTX760M with 340.93-4 drivers. But as i said, result is the same with both cards.
I found something: It only works when i have my second screen connected! I can reproduce this. I use "xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --left-of eDP1" to connect the second monitor. I guess there was an update to the xserver that broke something. The last time i remember playing without my second screen was around October the fifth. If you are interested, i can post a list of packages related to xserver which i updated since then.
Hi there bro, I encountered similar problems after downloading the last update which was released about 3 days ago, everything became unresponsive like when clicking the heroes, watch, armory, treasury, play, everything became laggy. It's totally unplayable - the pub and practice with bots match. I already did everything including verifying cache, even reinstalling DOTA. It always takes long to load up, and takes a while to proceed from the dota loading screen to the dashboard. And like what you said, the mouse style changes as well. Then after that it freezes. My FPS has been so unstable dropping as low as 1FPS then 10 then 40 then 30 then 50 then 1 again, and so on. Have you got any information about this? Thanks!! @posti, it sounds like you've found a possible xserver explanation for this? Do you still think there's a bug in Reborn?
@gdrewb-valve I've got the same problem stated in the first post.
the game freezes right after the loading screen ends. For me it makes no difference if I have my second screen on or off. In both cases it freezes.

ok for me it seems that the problem is somewhere in the windowed mode... game starts with the -fullscreen argument.

That's odd, usually fullscreen is the more complicated option. We'll have to see if we can repro.

@gdrewb-valve @posti I think there was a bug a while ago which affected tiling window manager, as I can see from @posti 's specs we both use tiling window managers (i3 and awesome). Maybe that could also be a hint where to look at.
There are issues like #359 where it's actually fullscreen that hangs on startup, so there are certainly issues with various window managers.
I have the exact same issue. I start Dota 2 and after the loading logo I end a staring at a blank screen. Fresh ubuntu 14.04.3 install, nvidia/current/nvidia-304 drivers. I can provide logs if needed. Also the -fullscreen option doesn't help.
@AlphaPhi I think its not the same issue if it does not start with -fullscreen, it might still be the same issue with the windowed mode. you might want to start dota with

@AlphaPhi you definitely have a different issue. Your system is missing a dependency of Reborn, check out issues like #35 or #105. Also the 304 drivers from NVIDIA are not going to work, you'll want a recent one like 352.

Having the exact same issue with xmonad on Archlinux as well : dota logo appears, then hangs on black screen with only in-game cursor showing ; dashboard never shows up. Running the game with -fullscreen fixes it. After selecting windowed mode through settings, resizing the window causes it to hang again.

Ideally, it would be great if linux games in general would stop trying to force things like window size or fullscreen mode themselves... This should be handled by the window manager, through WM hints like _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN. Valve games especially have always had trouble with tiling window managers because of this.

After the last update the game freezes on the startup loading screen. If i don't switch the window it seems the game finishes loading and then freezes before the dashboard is shown. I cant really tell this for sure, but after the usual loading time the mouse pointer switches to the dota style but the game is frozen. That's the only clue i have so i assume it has something to do with the dash board. No error messages from steam or dota itself. Game cache integrity confirmed. It doesn't seem to be graphics driver related because launching the game with either the Nvidia card or the Intel integrated graphics has the same result. Also other games work just fine.
