I'm not seeing this behavior. The spell will deal damage on cast and the 7 seconds after that. If the unit walks away from any trees they will stop taking damage. This was seen in demo mode.
I haven't been able to replicate the bug post restarting client, may have been entirely UI issue on my side

The shard is only doing 3 instances of damage to enemies and then not continuing even though the spell is still in effect
It has a total of 7 instances of damage over 7 seconds, the spell with damage is only working properly for 3 seconds
