Dark Souls 3 (374320) audio corrupts (and stays corrupted) after a while #2007

Compatibility Report

System Information

Symptoms

After playing for a while the audio gets corrupted and garbled, and stays that way until I close and re-open the game. Sometimes it happens after 5 minutes and sometimes it takes like 30 minutes. The game seems to stutter when this kicks in.

Reproduction

Play the game for a while.

Note: I'm using an USB headset (HyperX Cloud 2). This headset is plug and play, it doesn't need any kind of special drivers, it's just a generic USB sound card. It doesn't give me problems with any other game, not even other Proton games.

Possibly related to Wine Bug 45623.

drcassar commented 5 years ago

I can confirm that this happens to me too. I'm using a fully updated Arch Linux with the "Steam (Runtime)" launcher. For me the only problem is that the voice of NPCs doesn't play. Music and SE play as normal. The problem seems to happen at random, the only reproducible way to trigger the bug for me is written below. Don't read it if you want to avoid minor boss spoilers.

!!!!!!! SPOILER !!!!!!!! The bug always happens during the Dancer boss battle. !!!!!!! SPOILER !!!!!!!!

@drcassar Is it possible to provide a save file at that location so we can try to reproduce this more easily?

aeikum commented 5 years ago

Also, Proton 3.16-5 shipped with a couple of fixes for certain USB devices. @Leon422, I would be interested to know if you still experience this problem in 3.16-5.

Reonu commented 5 years ago

I haven't experienced this again, no.

I'll make one, test, and share with you. Where is the recommended place to upload it?

aeikum commented 5 years ago

@drcassar Here is fine. If that doesn't work, you can email it to me.

@aeikum Tested here today again with the new proton update. Had no problem with the audio in the boss battle that I mentioned. I don't know why the game is not as smooth as before, but the audio issue in this battle seems to be fixed. I'll report if I ever get the random audio problem where the voices don't play but everything else is fine.

OS: Ubuntu Focal Fossa (development branch) (64 бита) KERNEL: 5.4.0-21-generic CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.00GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 440.64 RAM: 32 GB Sound: Creative X-Fi 20K1 (Auzentech Prelude 7.1) Audio Config: 5.1 surround Proton 5.05 Steam lastest Beta client

Audio corrupts on M.2 SSD, but not on normal HDD with Ubuntu Budgie 20.04

Also i need add launch option "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%" to enable audio for newgame cutscene and for some other cutscenes in the game, without it, cannot progress further in certain levels, like after fight with Yorm The Giant. Because cutscene clips cannot load and breaks game progress.

After playing for a while the audio gets corrupted and garbled, and stays that way until restart the game or travel to different place via bonfire. Audio seems break while sounds are most intensive and sounds are from more sources. I think that M.2 SSD are loading things so fast, so game cannot load things correctly sometimes. That happens also on Skyrim and maybe to other games too.

Here is the video, after 1.24 hours of gameplay, first problem with sound are appear. https://youtu.be/djTzox9lACk?t=5060 The sound problem start exactly in 1:24:21 This time problem will not last long time, and it's repair itself, maybe because i recording this gameplay, but most of time, sound get worse and worse, until almost all things in game lost sounds. And only way to repair this, is exit from game and start again. There in 1:25:10 are the effect from losing some hitting sound effects(killing hit with my blade have different sound now): https://youtu.be/djTzox9lACk?t=5110 And keep watching fight with this 3 Winged Knights hitting sound effects. After i kill them, the teleport also have different sound. Steam Log: https://pastebin.com/ePV8hFwT

Hello again. I decide to test edge version of XanMod Linux Kernel with FSYNC support and Proton 5 dev version and with Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 dev version too, to see if any bug will be fixed. After testing i can say: Now DS3 is running absolutely perfect without any performance impact, even when recording video with 60 FPS. I notice only that, game now loading slower, but all things are working just perfect. This test is with OS and game, installed on Samsung 512GB M.2 SSD. This is my video: https://youtu.be/edL_dkEjDJU Linux Kernel for this test: 5.6.2-xanmod2 Proton version for this test: proton-5.0-6-rc3 Video driver for this test: Nvidia 440.64 Steam client: Steam Beta I'm Imprest! What else i can say?
