On the Proton tracker, yes; there's elusive black screen problem with DOOM
that we suspect might be related to having a controller connected.
Will be great to have your report to help us narrow it down!
Tested with wireless keyboard
Turned off Steam controller, same issue
Turned off Steam controller, added +r_renderapi 1

I was able to get it to run by using winetricks to install vcrun2015 and setting the renderer to OpenGL with +r_renderapi 0. The Vulkan renderer results in a freeze after the intro videos.
No wireless controller here. Trying to run the game with steam-runtime brings me to black screen. Nothing happens and able to quit only by killing it through terminal.

I also have the blackscreen issue since today - yesterday it was working flawless. I could solve the problem by installing xinput dll via winetricks ...
WINEPREFIX=/path to your steamlibrary/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/379720/pfx winetricks xinput
so its probably something that changed this night in the winebuild regarding xinput.
I have the same issue. Was working well on OpenGL on the first day, but now it's only a black screen that must be killed via terminal. Using +r_renderapi 1 causes an immediate crash to console. Using Fury X with the latest unstable Padoka drivers.
As of the latest steam beta client, game launches. Tried without the renderapi option as well. Was an update pushed? if so, THANKS!
I can confirm, for me its also working without doing any extra work.
+1
OK to close this?
what is the solution?
For OpenGL the issue resolved itself for me. I assume there was an update of some sort.
For Vulkan, here is how I fixed the crash: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/338
Try adding +r_renderAPI 1
to launch parameters.
I will open a new issue as it might be a different cause.
Hello, I just created an account to GITHUB so I could chime in. I am also having the same issues as the original poster. I try to run the game and it goes to a black screen with no sound.
I've tried launching the game with different settings like +r_renderAPI 1 and +r_renderAPI 0 as well as the no intro video command. Nothing worked.
I tried the Winetricks Xinput suggestion listed here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/217#issuecomment-415440649
And no luck either.
But, to be honest, I have no idea how to install vcrun2015 using Winetricks.
My system specs
@coffeecrispbar
to install vcrun2015 “WINEPREFIX=/path to your steamlibrary/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/379720/pfx winetricks vcrun2015”
You may need to update your winetricks if it gives you an error about installing to a 64bit prefix
Same issue here. Black screen with a freezing "Doom Console" window popping up. Running Solus with stock Nvidia drivers
@jelle619 Have you tried steam runtime instead of native? A few people including myself have had to switch to runtime for Doom to work (if you get the default.cfg error checking the logs in the prefix/blank Doom console window)
My setup:
When I launch Doom 2016 without any additional commands, I see the bethesda and id software logo but with major glitches, then a static image like this one is shown and I can hear the menu music, and hit up/down arrow and here the menu sounds.
I tried to use +com_skipIntroVideo 1
, and I still see the same garbled screen.
I tried adding xinput
with winetricks, and still get the same error.
Then I tried adding vcrun2015
with winetricks, and with this I do not get the garbled screen, but a black screen (and still can hear the music and menu sounds).
When I try to use the vulkan backend using +r_renderAPI 1
, the game crashes and displays a yellow on blue log:

I'm not sure why it says that the argument was +r_renderAPI -2
while it was +r_renderAPI 1
.
@parkerlreed that seems to have fixed it. Thanks for your help!
I just wanted to say that I opened a new thread here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/788#issuecomment-416433449
and had my problem solved there. The vcrun2015 wineprefix trick worked for this issue.
I tried adding xinput with winetricks, and still get the same error. Then I tried adding vcrun2015 with winetricks, and with this I do not get the garbled screen, but a black screen (and still can hear the music and menu sounds).
when you get a black screen and hear the game running try hitting alt+enter to enter into windowed mode. The game should display.
Ok so I managed to make it work after doing a few things.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1"
line to my /etc/default/grub
file, then ran update-grub
vulkaninfo
+com_skipIntroVideo 1
in the launch optionEverything runs at a constant 45fps with the 'high' settings. The game is gorgeous.
Thanks Valve, Wine devs and the vulkan creators :)
Sorry for all the cross posting between two threads. But I just wanted to post this here as well:

If people are having issues with black textures while using the Nvidia 396.54 or 390.77 or 390.85 drivers try changing the AA settings from SMAA (1TX) to SMAA or some other setting.
I just want to add as many trouble shooting solutions that I can.
Black texture issue: https://i.imgur.com/QB1vQ5v.jpg
Changed AA settings (solved): https://i.imgur.com/vm1LOQs.jpg
Use winetricks like for wine or wine-staging solve the issue. In this case xinput and vcrun2015.
cd /home/xxxxxx/Steam/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/379720/pfx
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks
chmod +x winetricks
WINEPREFIX=/home/xxxxx/Steam/SteamApps/compatdata/379720/pfx ./winetricks xinput vcrun2015
@corvusd I didn't have any luck with this. I tried it with 3 different distro installs and all it says is another version of VC++ is already installed. I'm not given any other options and Doom still runs like hot garbage, even after a complete reinstall and another VC++ install attempt.
I had the same issue using Steam Play under Linux. It perplexed me as i tried every solution here. I got further beyond just the blackscreen of NOU and then instead of the blackscreen, the machine would lock up and just play the audio in the background causing me to hard power off the machine.
Solution? It ended up being Steam Overlay that was causing the majority of my headaches. I was wondering why Nvidia-smi was reporting 0% gpu utilization until after i disabled the Steam Overlay when it reported 100%.
exactly same issue currently on my debian. winetriks didn't permit to fix it
Tried setting
+r_renderapi 1
and+r_renderapi=1
in game launch options. No sound output.System information:
