Symptoms

The menu is smeary and almost impossible to use... The game itself runs and plays fine once loaded steam-2200.log

Reproduction

open the game menu

With Proton 5.0, It appears that any overlapping button on the following menu is also pressed. This is usually caused because an X11 server may create false up and down events with identical time-stamps. Just remove these touples when filtering input events and games fetching one event per frame should work.
