I launch steam from a terminal in order to get some logging.

On game "Code Vein" launch I get different results based on Proton version.

Hello @mfp20, we're tracking issues with games run with Proton in the Proton issue tracker. Additionally, we're using one issue report per unofficially supported game title, but there isn't an open issue report for this game, so I've straight transferred it to the this issue tracker. In the future, please use a gist when pasting large chunks of text.

Please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

It sounds like you're using an AMD graphics card, but may be missing the vulkan-radeon package. If this is the case, please check that both vulkan-radeon and lib32-vulkan-radeon packages are installed.

@mfp20 I also use Arch btw and have somewhat similar AMD system. I recently tried Code Vein demo with Proton 4.11-11 (and later with 4.11-12) and got that same "can't find symbol in module" error you got and game wouldn't start.

With PROTON_LOG=1 I could see from log that problem was faudio couldn't open alsa device. I prefer plain ALSA and dmix and I didn't realize I had process running in background which had autostarted pulseaudio, which in turn grabbed the audio device. I edited my .asoundrc to only include dmix as a default device and after that I disabled udev-detect module, enabled alsa-sink module and pointed it at the right dmix device, all in pulseaudio config, to make pulseaudio not grab the device and play nice with dmix. After this, demo started OK, above mentioned error was gone and at least the demo version seems to run very well.

If you don't care about ALSA at all, removing ~/.asoundrc and installing pulseaudio-alsa package might be a fix too. Looking at ProtonDB reports, game should run out of the box and I haven't had any problems with the demo other than the configuration specific to my system and needs. So, can't say if any of this applies to your case or not, just my experience getting this to work on my system.

Symptoms

The game would launch with proton 6.3-8 + dxvk's dlls but crashes when I try to enter the game itself.

Reproduction

Launch using Linux mint 21.1 Nvidia RTX3050M with nvdia-driver-525, dxvk dll manually installed (or not) cpu is i5-12500.

The game would launch fine into title screen but would crash afterwards when the game is loaded.

Seems like the game has stopped working; with any Proton version, the launch banner appears, a fullscreen window opens, then closes afterwards. Possibly some miscellaneous Steam Client-related problem (given that it did launch before with these same versions and the title itself hasn't received any updates since then).

EDIT: Steam Client beta has the same issue.

Clean prefix, verified integrity of files; the whole shebang was already tried, short of downgrading my GPU drivers.

Update: seems the issue is caused from the use of gamemoderun, as clearing the launch arguments allows the game to work just fine. See more at FeralInteractive/gamemode#489

Starting the game with any version of proton, including experimental and GE versions.
