Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (314160) #352

When trying to play the game, the window to choose the flight settings is problematic, making it hard to set any option. When seeing the 3D model the elements of the window start to blink, making things even worse.

I noticed the process mount.ntfs-3g was using 23% of CPU all the time with the game open, making loadings slow and performance low, significantly worse than on Windows.

As they were (seemingly) unrelated issues, one related to I/O performance and another to graphics I thought it would be better to create two different issues for.

As every time I open the game it shows that "Completing Setup" steps, the loading times are of around 15 minutes. Fortunately the window don't need to be focused while loading.

I noticed a strange behavior when opening the game. Dmesg shows the following:

I don't understand why it tries to read from the DVD drive (sr0).

the original Flight Simulator X was on a DVD so it could be it's trying to read something off the DVD in Linux and for some reason not Windows. Like a piece of DRM is still there. Or it could be programming.

Tried to run this using D9VK, keep getting "The requested flight file is corrupt or can't be found. "Proton_USE_D9VK"

Hello @Evernow, PROTON_USE_D9VK is an env variable. In order to use env variables in Steam's launch options, you need it to be before the command that's being called and Steam let's us use %command% to do that.

You most likely added PROTON_USE_D9VK to the launch options when you wanted to try out PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%, so it was passed as a option to the game.

Using D9VK the game does not work, the most likely cause is:

Not sure, but it seems to me the game tries to use DX11/10. so dxvk is the one too use. Maybe there is configs to edit that forces the game to use DX9.

The game uses OpenGL and Vulkan on my system. I can confirm OpenGL because of some iris bugs that were fixed and the Steam store page shows it requires DirectX 9.0c too.

I know Vulkan is being used too because the process maps shows both iris_dri.so and libvulkan_intel.so loaded, but I don't know where Vulkan is being used, as the gameplay uses iris.

The game will not launch unless I am using PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%. When launched the splash is able to be focused but as soon as the main game loads it does not grab input which means I cannot do anything. I am on proton 5.0-6 and have intel graphics

After the latest updates, this game no longer works with DirectX 9.0c, requiring at least DirectX 10 and I am having an issue opening the game using DXVK. While the window to configure the flight works the same when using Wine D3D (working well until the model of the aircraft appears, then the window get buggy), loading the scenario after choosing the settings crash early on loading.

With Wine D3D, the game works but the menus are problematic: they work but have no words. Separated windows that could be opened, as the GPS one, are black and can block large portions of the screen and seem impossible to close once opened. Steam overlay does not work after starting the flight.

Not using any menus or other windows, it is possible to fly, but it's not the ideal experience.

I don't seem to be able to get the game to launch at all anymore. Anyone else having any success?

A little shame as I' hoped that some of the bugs would've managed to get themselves fixed with all the great improvements Proton has been seeing
