System Information

I confirm:

Symptoms

Black screen in several games, audio from title playing so game is otherwise working

Reproduction

Starting the game.

Workaround

Seems to happen in games using ffmpegsumo.dll. Upgrading from nwjs (https://nwjs.io) to 0.44.5 with actual ffmpeg.dll fixes problem and game starts correctly.

Questions remaining

Is it enough to work around that single DLL? Or are the other files also absolutely necessary (is it enough to detect just that DLL?)? Is it possible to have Wine detect this or to include workaround or is the game update always needed?

Hello @ipr, with a vanilla, unmodified game, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and drag and drop the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log into the comment box.

With different game, I believe not RPGMaker, Flandre's dream. - 36000 ft deep - (1085340) I also had the EGL error, resulting in black screen. Deleting libEGL.dll from game directory made it work without any issues. This game also has ffmpegsumo.dll and nwjs.

Some games work when using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 Others seem to be generally sensitive to changes in system or just have racy condition somewhere (maybe only waiting forever?). WebGL / Webassembly support seems to have some issues which affects some games.

@ipr I found there two other ways to get RPGMaker games working other than changing to WINE3D or deleting libEGL.dll.

The first way works if you have a www folder. If that's the case you don't need proton and it should work at native performance. Switch to the www folder, open an HTTP Server, like nodejs-http-server, and play the game in your browser.

The other option is to set DXVK configuration to DirectX 9.3. It seems sometimes the problem is a few functions aren't implemented yet. You can see "Stub" in the logs if that's the case. Create a file dxvk.conf on your game installation folder with the following options:

dxgi.deferSurfaceCreation = True
d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True
d3d11.maxFeatureLevel = 9_3

Instead of deleting the DLL you may overwrite it (along with libGLES) from newer nwjs package.

Running nwjs (./nw) instead of Game.exe can work, but sometimes some assets (like music files) are in the game binary itself. This all depends a lot on which version is bundled with the game.

I haven't looked at the dxvk.conf before, thanks for the tip!

@vermeeren thank you so much for that reply. It was a frustrating problem for me because the game wouldn't let me go to the save menu during cut-scenes and it always happened during cutscenes, looooooong cut-scenes that I had to play again and again.

@unit73e thanks for this, I didn't know you could run rpgm games using this folder on a browser. unfortunately it doesn't show my saved files. would have been cool if it did coz the performance is SO much better.

@srushti335 the reason for your browser solution problem is your cache is broken. You need to clear it. One way of avoiding this problem is having a new data folder just for games (explained later). If you use the libEGL.dll solution you don't need to delete those files, you can simply override DLLs like @ipr suggested.

Meanwhile I learned a lot about RPG Maker versions, so here's a summary for everyone, in case you end up with these issues.

There are several RPG Maker versions but the most common can be grouped like so:

RPG Maker XP, VX, or VX Ace aren't hardware accelerated at all, so there's not much that can be done if those game run slow in Linux. However MV and MZ run in a browser, so there's a lot of fixes that can be done.

Fix Black Screen

Defer Surface Creation

Sometimes it's possible to fix with DXVK alone. This works if the game uses Direct3D, and you know because DXVK log will show up at start.

Add a dxvk.conf to the game directory with the following content:

dxgi.deferSurfaceCreation = True
d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True

Start the game and the black screen should go away.

Override OpenGL libraries

The MV and MZ executable runs with an embedded chrome with OpenGL ES support, and usually have two DLLs for that, the libEGL.dll and libGLESv2.dll.

Like @ipr mentioned there's no need to delete those libraries. If the game runs very slow, shows no graphics, crashes, freezes, you might need to run the Wine built-in libraries, instead of the Windows native libraries, and you can do that with:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="libEGL,libGLESv2=b" wine <game>

Or the Steam equivalent:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="libEGL,libGLESv2=b" %command%

Run in a native browser

If that doesn't work the alternative is running in a native browser:

The performance is much better but there are big catches with this solution:

Improve image quality

I also have tips if you want to improve image quality, use Gamescope:

gamescope -F pixel -S fit -- wine <game>

This will run the game with a pixelated filter, so it won't look blurry.

If you want to improve even more you can figure out the game resolution first with xwininfo. Resolutions in RPG Maker are often non-standard. The default resolutions are 544x416 for XP/VX and 816x624 for MV/MZ.

After figuring that out:

gamescope -w 816 -h 624 -F pixel -S fit -- wine <game>

If the game is tearing you can also set the refresh rate to 60 frames per second:

gamescope -w 816 -h 624 -F pixel -S fit -r 60 -- wine <game>

This works for any RPG Maker game (or any game really).
