This is not only this game, i also tried CS GO / TF2 and has the same issue

ThisNekoGuy commented 4 years ago

I can also vouch for this.

For some reason, even without having any conflicts in my add-ons list, I've been getting random crashes in the native version (when playing with a Windows friend), so I tried to run the game in Proton 5.0-9 and and it warns me about VAC in this same way even though it's a local hosted server (on my friend's end) and not an official one.

However, whenever I try to host my own instance and have my Windows friend join (regardless of version), I get stuck at a full loading bar and he gets stuck at an empty loading bar.

(Side note: The Linux version seems to not load the main menu music for whatever reason while, running the Windows version in Proton, does. Running the game with Steam Container Tool doesn't fix it either.)

(Edited to correct typos in my original post)

rizzini commented 2 years ago

I'm still getting this behavior.

Jackzmc commented 2 years ago

I can confirm this on linux, using the latest proton experimental

PercyDLR commented 2 years ago

this also happens to me, I tried removing the addons folder (it was empty anyways), but the error still appears.

Compatibility Report

System Information

I confirm:

steam-240.log steam-550.log

Symptoms

Any source engine game that uses VAC does not allow to join protected servers. The problem doesn't appear while using native build. Besides that, the fonts are barely visible and somewhat distorted on a 2K screen, changing the resolution does not change anything.

Reproduction

Installing the games and launching them from Steam using Proton 7.0-2 or Experimental(using older versions like 6.3-8, 5.13-6, 5.0-10, 4.11-13, 4.2-9, 3.16-9 yield the same result; that should point to the problem's age and did not appear in recent builds) and joining any VAC-secured server(any official match in L4D2, any server in CSS).

ghost commented 2 years ago

I can also confirm this is happening with the latest Proton Experimental. I'm looking forward for this game to be playable on Proton because let's be real, the plethora of problems the Linux port has are not getting fixed anytime soon.

howlcipher commented 2 years ago

I can confirm this is happening to me with official proton and GE versions, disabling it I am able to play, but with no addons. I was playing just fine using proton until tonight, I'm not sure what has changed.

tth439 commented 1 year ago

can report i have a similar issue. Sometimes it does work when i verify file integrity before loading the game.

kushalreddykasarla commented 10 months ago

is there any way to resolve this, i too have the same problem

System Information

Symptoms

After the latest update (of Jun 25th), the game crashes when taking control over character, such as end of map intro, or taking over a bot. The game then game freezes and then closes after ~3 seconds. I did see a discussion comment stating that it does not crash when playing as the infected in versus, but I have not tested that.

The game was running fantastically before the update, with proton. Now it's unplayable

Video of loading c1m1_hotel, I stopped it the moment it began crashing https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/assets/4030546/cb25dac2-91af-4d8b-8d52-67ce3a5408f4

Reproduction

  1. Launch any map, such as map c4m1_milltown_a
  2. Wait for the map intro scene to end
  3. Crash

Other Information

This seems to be a proton issue, as the mess of a native build does not crash. This also happens with no addons, on singleplayer and community servers, and with -safe I wasn't sure if this should be filed here or Source-1-Games, I can post it there if need be.

alasky17 commented 3 months ago

@Jackzmc Could you retest if this is still happening? If you can still hit the crash, could you let us know which server(s) you were using? Official or unofficial?

Jackzmc commented 3 months ago

@alasky17 Forgot to reply to this thread earlier, the issue got resolved a few days later by another update. I believe it wasn't proton itself having issues but the windows build of the game.
