Reproduction

• Hit play button, select "Play Dogfight 1942". But everytime i try to start the game, the Window "Performing first time setup ..." appears. Same for "Dogfight 1942 Options"

Steam trys to install "dxwebsetup.exe, dotNetFx35setup.exe, vcredist_x86.exe" everytime i start the game, and this fails. Me guess, because they are web installers?

so i did this: protontricks -c "mv Win32Libs/dotNetFx35setup.exe Win32Libs/dotNetFx35setup.exe.bak" 217790 protontricks -c "mv Win32Libs/dxwebsetup.exe Win32Libs/dxwebsetup.exe.bak" 217790 protontricks -c "mv Win32Libs/vcredist_x86.exe Win32Libs/vcredist_x86.exe.bak" 217790 protontricks 217790 d3dx9 dotnet35 vcrun2008

and now the game starts.

Just retried with proton experimental and its working now! Can't see any issues, cut scenes working.

Yes, i can confirm. Works with experimental-8.0-20240205 fine.

I hadn't checked this for a long time, presumably those fixes in Experimental have propagated to the main Proton releases - I just tried in vanilla Proton 9.0-2 and it now runs. But bizarrely, even though English is selected in the options/launcher, it seems to only show Italian text (at a guess) in the game itself and there doesn't appear to be any language options inside the game.
