Compatibility Report

System Information

I confirm:

steam-202990.log

Symptoms

Black Ops 2 Multiplayer suffers the same fate as BO:II Zombies which is that after a few seconds of launching the game, an Unhandled Exception error occurs, crashing the game. Oddly enough you are able to connect to online before crashing (I'm assuming a library is missing?).

Have tested 6.3-7 too, same thing.

Reproduction

  1. Download and install Call of Duty: Black Ops II: Multiplayer.
  2. Enable "Proton Experimental" under Settings > Compatibility
  3. Launch game
  4. The game launches. Regardless of user input the game will crash. An error will pop up in the background stating "unhandled exception caught."

I tend to get the same issue except that Black Ops 2 crashes as soon as it opens I tried running it under proton experimental, 7.0-3 and 6.3-8 just to receive the same error(s). | Proton Experimental as of the date 2022-06-25

I also attempted to run it in terminal only to get this output, the unavailable package also occurs on other launches in terminal that use steam yet they run fine *the game ID used below is for Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Zombies (212910) but the same occur for Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Multiplayer (202990) and Call of Duty: Black Ops II (202970)

$ steam steam://rungameid/212910
These packages are not available:

- libnvidia-gl-515:i386

The Steam client may have limited functionality.
steam.sh[11120]: Running Steam on linuxmint 20.3 64-bit
steam.sh[11120]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
setup.sh[12402]: Steam runtime environment up-to-date!
steam.sh[11120]: Steam client's requirements are satisfied

Before I switched over to proton i was able to run all 3 of these games on WINE with no issues

System Info:-

If any more information required I will post it if asked for.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I also double checked the following as of the time of this post that the following is up to date in terms of patches:

Hello @Shadow-Hunt3r, Ubuntu's 32 bit whitelist policy is currently blocking the NVIDIA 515 series video driver in the Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA from providing the video driver's 32 bit userspace libraries, and Steam is directly telling you that part of your video driver is missing. Switch to an older release branch of the NVIDIA driver until that distro/PPA package issue is resolved.

I have changed the drivers from 515 to 510, tested the command I included earlier only to get a similar result only difference being the missing package error being removed which terminal output is included below

Experimental fixes the crashing issue, though it now exhibits the same mouse input behavior as Modern Warfare II and Black Ops 1, namely that the mouse sensitivity seems somewhat tied to the framerate. This is far more noticeable here in Multiplayer than it is in Zombies and in the campaign.

tunanachos commented 2 years ago

Seems the most recent release of Proton (Proton 7.0-4) has fixed the crashing issue. Playing with a controller suffers from occasional stuttering.

However the fact I'm able to play this game again after being unable to for several years is awesome!

serebit commented 2 years ago

I wouldn't close this issue. It now covers more than just the crashing issue, it covers all issues with the Multiplayer portion of the game, which includes the mouse input issue that I detailed above.

The Game now crashes on startup on my Steam Deck, it was working before. steam-202990.log

@m1ntkat We aren't seeing any crashes over here. I have a few questions to try to narrow this down.

* Have you tried any older proton versions like 8.0-5? Is it crashing on all proton versions now?

* Do you have an OLED deck or an LCD deck? Are you on SteamOS stable?

* Do you also have the Zombies DLC installed, or only the base game and the multiplayer game?
