Compatibility Report

System Information

I confirm:

Symptoms

Game gets stuck on a black screen at the ending of Episode 2, and then a window pops up saying "Fatal Error!".

Same also occurs with Proton experimental-bleeding-edge and GE-Proton7-17

steam-1265920-experimental-bleeding-edge.log steam-1265920-proton-7.0-2.log system_info.txt

Save game file (continue Episode 2, it should continue at the cut-scene where after it crashes) SaveGames.zip It goes into /SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/1265920/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/LiS/Saved/SaveGames/

Reproduction

Play the game up until the ending of Episode 2

Having the same issue. Happened at the end of Episode 1 too for me.

Edit: got through the ending of episode 2 by changing to Proton Experimental and setting the resolution to the lowest it can go. Not sure if this helps anything else.

For everything else I was either using Proton 7 or Proton GE.

bblacher commented 2 years ago

Same problem here. I would like to note that this happens on my desktop pc running Proton Experimental as well as on my Steam Deck running the recommended Proton version (proton-stable according to SteamDB). It happens at the end of chapter 1 which is why I can't complete the game without skipping forward to the next chapter. I would also like to add that this is a Steam Deck "Verfied" title.

htbrown commented 2 years ago

After completing the game, I can say it happened at multiple points throughout the game.

Any official Proton version gave me TV test patterns for some cutscenes and any GE versions gave me black screens with fatal errors at points. I ended up having to switch between the two, changing resolutions constantly, to finish the game.

I would agree that, if the experience is anything like that on desktop Linux, this game certainly shouldn't be Steam Deck Verified.

I was hitting this with Proton 7 and GE-Proton7-17 but switching to Proton experimental seems to have resolved it

bblacher commented 2 years ago

I just tried with Proton Experimental (not bleeding-edge) on my Steam Deck, didn't fix the issue.

Can confirm that moving to Proton Experimental does fix the fatal errors, but leaves me with the TV test bars for a large amount of cutscenes, resulting in me missing parts of the story. Proton GE fixes this, but introduces the fatal errors at points so I have to keep switching between the two.

brain-anti-freeze commented 2 years ago

I did get two test pattern videos in the final episode but no further crashes (and other videos played ok)

bblacher commented 2 years ago

This seems to be a regression as I don't have this problem with Proton 6.3-8.

Bapf commented 1 year ago

This seems to be a regression as I don't have this problem with Proton 6.3-8.

That's working for me too. Alt least the fatal error in Episode 1 is gone so far.

KuJo-Ger commented 1 year ago

I have the problem in episode 1 that in the scene with Chloe at the lighthouse, when Max probably just gets another vision, I get a "Fatal Error" and the game stops. I tried it with Proton 7.04 and Experimental (bleeding edge). I always get a "Fatal Error" at the same point.

===================== EDIT / ADDENDUM

As requested by @kisak-valve below, I replayed the scene at the end of episode 1 and generated the log to the error under Proton 7.04. See attachment. I have also uploaded my system information. See link.

The log ends a few seconds after I had the "Fatal Error". At that point a cut scene would play next. Exactly where the cut scene should start, the game freezes and generates the Fatal Error. I hope that helps.

I then also tried the latest GE version, GE-Proton 7.37 - without success. Still a "Fatal Error" at the end of Episode 1.

Then I tried Proton 6.3-8 - and what can I say - it works! Was able to finish Episode 1 without error. Episode 2 ran through without any problems. But at the end of episode 2 I got a very short test screen, so I don't know if I missed a cut-scene there. But I was able to finish Episode 2 without any problems. I'm currently in episode 3, so far without any problems.

It's strange that it works in an older version, but neither in the stable current version (7.04), nor in the experimental one, nor in the current GE version.

Hello @KuJo-Ger, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, reproduce the regression, and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

KuJo-Ger commented 1 year ago

@kisak-valve : I have attached the requested info to the post with the error description (see above).

McMarius11 commented 1 year ago

i played on the steam deck and at the end of season 1 it crashed with the "fatal error" with the latest proton, Proton 6.3-8 ran the scene without a crash

Edit: it crashes with Proton Next and Experimental too. It is a big regression. It crashes in the not ingame cutscenes with everything except Proton 6.3-8
