Proton 8.0-4 Release Candidate testing #7095

Closed ivyl closed 11 months ago

Hey all!

We've put together a new 8.0 Release Candidate build for you to test.

In the Steam client the Proton 8.0 app should have a release-candidate beta branch (look for Proton 8.0 in your Steam Library, right click -> Properties... -> BETAS) which you can choose to start testing the 8.0-4 Release Candidates (note that the name of the build in the Steam Settings dialog will not be updated). I will post changes here when we push new builds. The source for the latest RC build is available on the proton_8.0-rc branch in this repository. This branch may be force pushed.

We are interested only in issues that are new to the 8.0-4 RC builds. If you believe that something broke please confirm that the problem does not occur with 8.0-3 (the "none" beta branch) before reporting it here.

The changelog is tentative - it has not yet been verified by our QA staff, and can change before the final release as we add or remove features during RC testing.

(EA game) the sims 4 have a weird lag, this happen after passing principal menu

SuperSamus commented 12 months ago

Titanfall 2 EA Desktop installs, launches, and can log in just fine. However, when it tries to actually launch the game, it displays: "Failed to launch game. An error on our end caused the launch to fail. Try again a little later." The EA Desktop App can be navigated just fine, but if you attempt again to launch Titanfall 2 from there, I get a "Launching game" window, then it closes, and... nothing happens.

Same behavior with Proton Experimental.

Friendly reminder that we're looking for discussion of regressions between Proton 8.0-3 and the Proton 8.0-4 release candidate on this issue report. Other ongoing issues with the compatibility of games should be discussed on the separate compatibility reports for each game.

Ok 👍😄

update problem solved:

it was a drivers issue, updating to AMDGPU drivers from radeon drivers fixed the problem

hjpaul7 commented 12 months ago

Fixed EA Desktop having a blank log-in window after its recent update. Fixed an issue with EA Desktop sometimes not launching after an update.

Hi @ivyl, this may get marked as off topic but I've been curious for a while. Can you roughly share what it is that the EA App does to break proton compatibility when it updates?

Thanks for the RC!

folks, I've tested around 80 games with this RC, and haven't found regressions. Congratulations for this release.

@ranplayer Wow!!! Thank you for all the testing, and for reporting back with the "null result" - those are valuable :)

ranplayer commented 11 months ago

No worries @alasky17 . I like this project and to contribute the way I can. Thanks for all the hard working involved.

nyabinary commented 11 months ago

Binding of Isaac: Repentance is completely borked on the RC The menu is fine, but when you start & load in a new game you get a visual artifact/black box covering your whole screen. Tested using Steam Deck

alasky17 commented 11 months ago

@Nyabinary I am unable to reproduce this issue. I added the Repentance DLC, so when the game launches, it says "Binding of Isaac: Repentance" instead of Rebirth. I have a few questions to help narrow this down:

nyabinary commented 11 months ago

@alasky17 Not 8.0 either, the regression starts at 7.0 and persists in Proton Experimental (Including bleeding edge), I'm using SteamOS 3.5 so preview ver. Also, I'm curious how would a log help since the game doesn't crash, it just doesn't render correctly.

alasky17 commented 11 months ago

@Nyabinary Proton logs are useful in diagnosing a wide range of failures, from crashing to controller input issues to networking failures, you name it :)

Thank you for the details - the regression is certainly interesting, and I will try SteamOS 3.5 to see if I can hopefully reproduce the failure there.

As a heads up, this thread is specifically for regressions between Proton 8.0-3 and 8.0-4, so I will be transferring any follow-up to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4868 since Binding of Isaac: Repentance is a DLC of Rebirth.

thank you all for testing for regressions against 8.0-3, much appreciated!
