Proton audio quality #7139

Hello gents,

I have more like question or asking for advice..

All games played via Proton have distorted audio under one condition, if the produced sound effect is very loud. Example: big explosions or heavy meele weapon strikes with various loud shockwave sound effects etc etc. Those short spikes in loudness sound like heavy audio clipping and distortion.

If you bother to read my old Reddit thread, there may be some more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/ho9vv1/proton_audio_quality/

I cannot identify what is causing this for years and meanwhile i have moved from PulseAudio to PipeWire but issue still remains with Proton games. Native linux content has no audio distortion, clipping or anything else. I have even setup PipeWire virtual surround sink with Atmos HRIR and sound is clean and great in games until something very loud is happening in game. Then audio starts clipping and distortion is tearing my ears. After very loud in-game event is over, everything is nice and clean again.

Can i somehow regulate dynamic range or sound volume normalization or something please, on Proton games? What can causing this distortion on lound sound effects? It's basically stopping me from switching to linux :(

I may have found a workaround..

It seems like PipeWire virtual surround sink volume (by default at 100%) is affecting audio clarity of Proton games. When i lower down volume on this sink to cca 75% very loud audio events in game are not anymore clipping or distorted and they sound clean. Like it's adjusting amplification or something like that. Default PipeWire audio sink on souncard is still little bit distorted on loud effects, but at least volume regulation on virtual sink can be used as a workaround even if it's not a solution to Proton audio quality.
