Proton 8.0-5 Release Candidate testing #7318

Hey all!

We've put together a new 8.0 Release Candidate build for you to test.

In the Steam client the Proton 8.0 app should have a release-candidate beta branch (look for Proton 8.0 in your Steam Library, right click -> Properties... -> BETAS) which you can choose to start testing the 8.0-5 Release Candidates (note that the name of the build in the Steam Settings dialog will not be updated). I will post changes here when we push new builds. The source for the latest RC build is available on the proton_8.0-rc branch in this repository. This branch may be force pushed.

We are interested only in issues that are new to the 8.0-5 RC builds. If you believe that something broke please confirm that the problem does not occur with 8.0-4 (the "none" beta branch) before reporting it here.

The changelog is tentative - it has not yet been verified by our QA staff, and can change before the final release as we add or remove features during RC testing.

All of the fixes listed below were deployed previously via Proton Experimental or Proton Hotfix. Appropriate Proton version was used automatically on a game basis on the Steam Decks. This release stabilizes those changes after extensive testing.

Clustertruck and bionic commando would crash at launch on 8.0.4 due to the audio devices bug, they launch on RC. Edit: Dirt 3, Dirt Showdown, and Civilization beyond earth which were also affected now launch as well

Looks like the online is working again in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2, but HDR is unavailable even on Proton Experimental.

ivyl commented 8 months ago

RC2 is up. We had some further improvements to stop Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster from crashing. No new changelog additions.

alasky17 commented 8 months ago

RC3 is up - Devil May Cry 5 HDR support improved (thanks @waspennator!)

sdornan commented 8 months ago

HDR seems to work in Red Dead Redemption 2 with 8.0.5 when set to fullscreen mode on the Steam Deck OLED. It did not work with 8.0.4.

Dunno if it's too late to pull in a few more fixes, but could it be possible to pull in the fix for Savant Ascent REMIXs performance that landed in experimental? Since the game is still set to use proton stable on deck?

alasky17 commented 8 months ago

@waspennator Unfortunately it was a bit late for that already, and since the regression is unlikely to impact more games (Savant Ascent REMIX is doing something "special"), the fix didn't make it in. We are aware of the awkward state and in the process of setting the game to use 7.0-x in the meantime so that users can avoid the regression with the default configuration :)

That's fine, mostly just wanted to ask. Tbh you should probably set it to Experimental instead of 7.0-x since it has the fix implemented in then.

Videos from ShadowGrounds: Survivor play fine now with this RC (tested with Mesa 23.3.1 (radv) and Kernel 6.1.69)

Road To Vostok Don't work with proton 8.0-5

nisehime commented 8 months ago

There is a regression in current Proton (Steam Deck). Darius Cozmic collection and Super Robot Wars 30 do not launch in Proton 8/Experimental until English language is set in game properties (from Japanese/Korean).

It worked on Proton 7

Riot20058 commented 8 months ago

Also burnout paradise remastered fail to boot up every work proton Experiment unless fixed not add all chaged made in proton Experiment made before first ver come out.

Blisto91 commented 8 months ago

Please keep the reports isolated to changes that have occurred from 8.0-4 to this 8.0-5RC specifically. For anything else use the issues dedicated to the games in question.

eldaphin commented 7 months ago

Launcher from Final Fantasy XIV Online quits with System Error -2146697208 (HTTPS System Error) under Wayland with 8.0-5RC. No problems under X11. Both Proton 8.0-4 and current Proton Experimental work (X11 and Wayland).

alasky17 commented 7 months ago

@eldaphin I was able to reproduce the error, but only intermittently (with both Wayland and X11, although Wayland seems more frequent) and I've been unable to get a log with the logging channels that we need to try to see the problem. Could you try to get a log of the error with PROTON_LOG=+secur32 %command%?

eldaphin commented 7 months ago

@alasky17 Sure, I hope it helps. :)

alasky17 commented 7 months ago

@eldaphin Thank you! We had missed reverting a problematic commit in the original 8.0-5. We just pushed an update to the 8.0 release candidate branch that should fix the error. Could you please retest and let me know if you still see the error?

eldaphin commented 7 months ago

@alasky17 I tested with the new version 8.0-5b under Wayland and didn't notice any more errors. 👍

ivyl commented 7 months ago

8.0-5 is now live! Thanks for your feedback and helping us iterate on this release :-)
