Symptoms

The Witcher 3 REDkit crashes in Step 2 of 5 where the editor is uncooking XBM data. Crashes towards

Reproduction

1. Download The Witcher 3
2. Download The Witcher 3 RedKit
3. Start RedKit
4. Point games field at game folder.
5. Point depot field at wherever you want RedKit to unpack The Witcher 3's files
6. Click generate
7. Wait until the editor tries to initialize the engine
8. Editor will crash

Tried installing dotnet40 and dotnet48 via winetricks with Arch wine-staging 8.21, and they install without issue. With those installed, the Editor completes every step without issue.

Proton has seemingly had issues for a long time with installing dotnet40 and occasionally dotnet48, even though wine-staging 8.21 installs them without error. Puzzled at what's going on there.

Waiting for Mono to catch up will be painful when dotnet48 just works:

Once the depot is valid, creating and opening projects, and running the editor works just fine:
