Correction to that download link for the sample textures: download
Apparently while bulk-converting TGA's to VTF's - I must have enabled LOD. I reconverted with LOD un-checked, and now Hammer no longer crashes when applying the textures. I am still having some issues getting the textures to show-up in the 3d preview window in textured mode. However, I assume that is something I am just not doing correctly (yet). So, closing this for now - since Hammer is no longer crashing (the original need for this case).
So, first of all .. not quite new to mapping (or Hammer / WorldCraft in theory). But, haven't mapped before for Source games - only the older GoldSrc games (HL1, TFC and various mods).
I am running the version of Hammer installed with TF2 (i.e. in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\bin folder, using "hammer.bat" to launch it). I seem to recall reading somewhere that post-SteamPipe that version must be used?
I can create brushes and move them around, apply stock textures to them, etc. - all without any issues.
I have a number of custom textures loaded-up. For each VTF there is a corresponding VMT file. Hammer does not seem to be having any issues finding the custom textures - in the sense that they do show-up in Hammer's texture-browser without any problem.
However, as soon as I apply any of these custom textures to a brush - Hammer hangs - indefinitely. More specifically, Windows-7 says it is "not responding".
By the way, these are really, really, really simple textures. I even dumbed them down to single-colors - and it did not make any difference. A sample of what I tried is available here: download.
The custom textures were made with Windows paint-brush, then converted to TGA, then converted to VTF using VTFEdit's "Convert Folder" option. Several encoding's were tried (RGB888/RGBA8888, BGR888/BGR8888 and DXT1/DXT5).
I have tried this on two different machines (thinking maybe Hammer didn't like the graphics card or something) without any success.
In both cases, the operating system is Windows-7, 64-bit - with the latest Windows Updates applied, etc. In one case (my primary gaming rig) it is an AMD 7450 card with the latest drivers from AMD (even tried the beta drivers to see if that helped - which it didn't). In the other test case, it was a laptop with built-in Intel drivers - making it nearly useless for gaming, but I would expect Hammer would be fine.
Not sure where else to go with this, but this page, suggested posting Hammer-related bugs here.
