9 years ago My HL:S on windows crashes to desktop after the valve background screen , Worked fine before (started and ran). verified files ok. Half-life deathmatch Source works fine on same machine.
It creates a DMP. file [crash_hl2.exe_20141216154003_1.dmp]
And also: [2014-12-16 15:40:01] [AppID 280] Schema not found on disk [2014-12-16 15:40:07] [AppID 280] CAPIJobStoreUserStats::BInit() - no stats found, aborting
Searching above i found other instance's of this and the fix (for above) delete game and re-install.

I wish I knew which series of updates did this, as I have played HL: S just fine on this same exact machine. I get a segfault, here is the output:
