[TF2] [Feature Request] [Competitive Mode]: Class Limits #2021

Say what you will about map selection and placement matches, but class limits are by far the most integral part to making any competitive format work.

Class limits have been a popular community suggestion since the MM beta, and without class limits in place games can easily be broken by, say 2 Engineers, 2 Heavies and 2 Vaccinator Medics defending last and making an unbreakable hold.

All competitive formats in TF2- Highlander, 6s, 4s, even the dreaded Prolander- function because of their class limits. They are their class limits- HL and 6s without weapon bans are still recognizeable as HL and 6s.

Since Competitive Mode is 6v6, I highly recommend implementing class limits. The class limits I'd recommend would be:

Offense Classes (Scout/Soldier/Pyro): Limited to 2 This fits with default 6s, as well as enabling Pyro to be multi-picked and preventing any confusion from new players on "specialist" or "generalist" categories.

Defense Classes (Demo/Heavy/Engineer): Limited to 1 All of these classes are massively powerful on their own. Placing two Demos together gives them the ability to cover each others' weaknesses and have unparalleled power. Pairing two Heavies or Engineers allows them to slow the game however they see fit, and in a format with a low playercount, they are quite difficult to counter in a hold.

Support Classes (Medic/Sniper/Spy): Limited to 1 Medic is the core of any key comp format, and is the heart of his team's advantages through ubercharges and overheals. Allowing more than 1 not only overcomplicates the mix, but is demonstratably overpowered.

While double Sniper/Spy isn't overpowered, it is typically at the expense of the team they're playing on. If possible, allowing only one Sniper OR Spy in play on a team, at a time, would be preferable, so as to prevent players from essentially throwing the game, but a 1-class limit on the Support category will also suffice.

For any hesitation implementing this feature, please consult league competitive play and, honestly, just player experience as a whole. Right now, Comp is a 12-man pub with abandon penalties and XP loss if you lose: it, and the players, deserve better than that.

For the betterment of Competitive Mode and the game as a whole, please consider implementing these limits.

or the classes could be tweaked, so that we can have a unified class limit for every class

Like hahagoni said I think a universal class limit would work out better. Just a standard two of any class. Honestly I would like to see a two class limit in Casual as well.

How would you suggest tweaking the classes without breaking their base design, or turning everyone into Overwatch-esque specialists that requires constant class-switching instead of raw skill and gamesense?

The competitive community came to the consensus that the class limits I laid out were the best solution a long time ago, and I don't think it'd benefit the game at large to change classes in such a way that they're all equally viable in every situation/equally weak overall.
