You can play HL2 or EP1 even if you don't own it #3492

You can play Half-Life 2 for free if you own one of these games, just by changing the launch options: Half-Life: Source Half-Life 2: Episode One Half-Life 2: Episode Two Half-Life 2: Lost Coast

Same way you can play Half-Life 2: Episode One if you own just Half-Life 2: Episode Two. So basically if you bought just EP2, you can play both HL2 and EP1 for free.

I propose creating new depot for HL2 with hl2\bin\ hl2\maps\ hl2\gameinfo.txt hl2\hl2_pak.vpk (18 MiB file, contains scene.image, node graphs,...) And mounting it just for HL2.

Similarly with EP1, mount these files just for EP1: episodic\maps\ episodic\gameinfo.txt

The ability to play Half-life 2 without it is due to the depot https://steamdb.info/depot/221/, as well as some depot with localization that is used in these games https://steamdb.info/depot/221/apps/. And in the case of EP1, probably - https://steamdb.info/depot/380/ and https://steamdb.info/depot/389/ and depot with localization.
