[TF2] [Feature Request] Add Steam's filter system to global messages / item names and descriptions #4034

People have been recently using the "Something Special for Someone Special" gift item (which globally shows a message to every player currently playing TF2 when used) to post racial slurs and otherwise unpleasant messages through renaming the item with a Name Tag. Steam has a filter system which censors profanity, and TF2's chat also takes advantage of this. The same should be implemented for global messages and when renaming / describing items to prevent cases like this from happening in the future.

This happened again today. Please address this issue.

I accidentally posted a duplicate of this issue, so i'll repost what I wrote down for that here

think it's no secret to anyone that's played the game that seeing hate speech is inevitable, maybe even on a daily basis.

Bots and players spam slurs and hateful language via text chat. There is a Steam censor that can be toggled, but otherwise players are allowed to spam slurs as much as they please.

Name tags have always been abused for this since their conception. Weapons and cosmetics with slurs/offensive language in their names, you get the deal. However, Something Special for Someone Special has the capability to project any text the user pleases to every single player that has the game launched. This is often used for nefarious purposes.

I don't have a specific solution for this issue, but it's something I'd like to see Valve tackle in the future. Whether it be more censoring or something like automatic temp chat bans. I certainly thing the name tag system has been long overdue for an overhaul.

To further expand, name tags and rings were a very cool experiment when they first came out. However, as things change ten-twelve or so years later I feel like it's time to revamp or at least update the system.

Valve is completely complicit in enabling that bigotry being allowed on the platform. The only preventative measure they have is converting slurs to "****", which does nothing in terms of getting the user's message across. If someone is spamming slurs, there should be no reason to even let them continue to speak or send that message to begin with.

Temp chat bans & filters for name tags/system messages would be nice change in the right direction at the bare minimum.
