I can confirm that - Since 64bit update. After this issue, switched to wayland. It happens to Steam Client installed from Valve site or from official Debian repo.

Ever since the 64 bit update, the game has been wildly unstable. Half the time I tab out, and go to re-open the game, it freezes my entire system. This freeze is very similar to this issue.
The only way to get out of this error state is to physically power cycle my entire system. Before blaming GNOME, or any Linux system component, TF2 is the only piece of software that causes this behavior on my system. This behavior all started with the 64 bit update.
Also, before suggesting I switch compositors, I have already tried switching to Wayland for another unrelated issue. Wayland just isn't ready yet. Trying to watch videos on Wayland with an NVIDIA GPU causes all sorts of weird visual glitches. It needs to work on x11.
