[HL2] Permanent launch error after either of the episodes are selected

I did not own the episodes previous to the anniversary First time it ran fine on Half life 2, but after choosing either of the episodes the game closes, and when relaunched after the valve intro that error will always show my steam: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198084655818/ please let me know if I need to provide additional information

Today I found this button on a discussion about the small patch, clicking on it triggered an additional 2gb update. I owned half life 2 before it went free but not the episodes. now the problem is fixed! I guess somehow I didn't grant me the episodes automatically until clicking on that button
