SteamOS 3.5 | 3.5.1 – Max volume levels are randomly lower per reboot #1173

Your system information

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Describe what you expected should happen and what did happen.

Boot the system from powered off, or reboot the system.

Expected behavior: volume levels remain consistent between boot sessions

Actual behavior: randomly, the actual volume levels are lower than it should be in both gaming mode and Desktop mode.

Workaround: try rebooting SteamOS until the issue goes away

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Power on/reboot SteamOS
  2. Test volume levels to see if they're correct or lower than expected
  3. Reboot the system until the issue occurs

I'm having same issue. It's half the volume it usually is. It happened every so often in 3.5 in main branch at that time but didn't think much of it. I'm actually having a issue also where desktop mode is louder than gameui.

I managed to temporarily fix my issue by turning down volume all the way down and restarting and it goes back to normal. It might be using your previous volume state as the baseline or something making the whole thing quieter.

The problem is not only the volume, the quality also gets pretty bad. Lower the volume and put your ear next to the speaker. The sound should be crips and clear, even at the lowest volume - but sometimes its very scratchy, disoriented and noisy. (This makes playing at night/ low volume very unpleased.)

I tried to reproduce this problem but I couldn't, versions:

VARIANT_ID=steamdeck-bc
VERSION_ID=3.5.1
BUILD_ID=20231011.100

In desktop-mode, if I set the volume levels to specific values (say, 42% or 58%), rebooting (trying many times, like 10-20) retains those values.

In game-mode, the % numbers are not shown, but approximately it looks the same across reboots too. (Also tried many times, and sometimes switching from game-mode to desktop-mode and vice versa). And since there is sound when interacting with the interface elements, the actual sound output matches those levels, there's no noticeable difference after reboots.

Questions:

Another thing is that switching from one mode to the other, each maintain their own levels. This might explain the behaviour described in a previous comment:

"I'm actually having a issue also where desktop mode is louder than gameui."

Or does the above mean that the max (or given, say "middle") volume in desktop-mode is noticeably higher than in gameui?

I'm also having this problem, and it usually happens, 25% maybe. Here is a video:
