idle NVME too hot after F7A0119 BIOS update #1267

Your system information

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. get and install new WD SN740 1TB
  2. update to steamOS 3.5
  3. go to desktop mode
  4. watch your NVME getting destroyed even in idle

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

i am experiencing realy bad times after steamOS 3.5 and BIOS update - my NVME (WD SN740) is too hot (70 degrees celsius) even in idle.. i didnt get or experience even once those temps during playing AAA games on older BIOS (116 or 118), but now after update disk is burning and reaching unsafe values.. temporary solution in my case is restarting steam deck, but after a while disk is getting hot without any reasons again..

i understand, that new WD disk is consuming abou 700mA more than original disk, but still - on older BIOS temps were max. at 55-60 degree celsius even during hardcore writing..

any ideas why please?

@pizvizdik how are you measuring the temperature?

For some SSDs reading the temperature causes the whole SSD to power on and heat itself up. Which is really surprising behaviour.

oh my, this is something new for me this behavior.. i am reading temps from in build system monitor - shoul be nvme-pci-0100 sensor:

but im not sure now which sensor exactly - after update some sensors disappeared and some are new.. after restarting system, idling temps are aroud 50 degrees which is still about 10 degrees more in comparison with steamOS 3.4..

i admit - i am still noob with linux systems, maybe im missing some detail..

@pizvizdik No worries, this behaviour is very unexpected and it surprised us as well. We ran into the same issue when trying to test some SSDs and were surprised when we ran into this issue.

Really one of the funniest examples of "measuring something changes its value".

If you want to check the temperature. try checking it only once every couple of minutes or something like that.

will try!! ill update this thread after some testing and measurements..

thank you kind sir for your time :)

Sometimes this can get fixed with an nvme firmware update, try to check it with your vendor. Sadly the updater are usually windows only, so you'll probably need a Windows on the go stick to apply them.

I’ve swapped my original eMMC for a nVME drive and I’ve noticed hotter temperatures lately. I’m using “watch sudo nvme smart-log /dev/nvme0” to monitor. It looks like when I use the new fan curve I’ll see 50C+ at idle while in desktop mode. I’ve changed to the old fan curve, switched back to desktop mode and I’m down to 34C.
