External monitor shows no image / dock does not connect after reboot #1438

Your system information

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I reboot from desktop mode with the Deck connected to an external screen, keyboard and mouse via the official dock. The Deck reboots but the screen does not show an image (both screens actually, internal and external). The keyboard is lit up though. When I disconnect the dock, I can see on the internal screen that the reboot was fine and I can enter my PIN. When I reconnect the dock, the keyboard is no longer lit up and the external screen still shows no image, the image on the internal screen disappears though. (It does not matter if I entered my PIN or not). If I reboot again after entering my PIN (before entering desktop mode again), the problem disappears until next time. I would expect my external screen to show an image the first time and my keyboard and mouse to work.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Reboot from desktop mode.

Steam Deck LCD version

Even though external monitor connectivity has been super spotty for me, I couldn't replicate this specific issue on my setup. The docked experience on the Deck seems plain unreliable.

I don't have this problem though I am using an older monitor.

I would suggest in the deck display settings, instead of leaving the display on auto, manually select the resolution and refresh rate of your external display.. that should help. The black screen might be it trying to set a resolution/refresh that it can't.
