I've noticed how slow the internet is in SteamOS, is this a bug, or what's going on? #230

In SteamOS i get around 800 kbps to 1.1 mbps, while in ubuntu, debian, and windows 8.1 i get around 4 mbps download speed doing the same thing (Steam downloading games in big picture mode, using iceweasel to download ubuntu iso) Anyone else?

I too have drasticaly reduced network speeds in steamos in comparison to other os's on same hardware. steampowered repositories especially last few weeks or so.

I wonder why

Balderick commented 10 years ago

steamos optimisations for in home streaming or for other network dependent services!?

Hellreaver commented 10 years ago

I wouldn't think they would slow everything down to optimize game performance, especially when my internet is slow all around, not just in big picture mode

Balderick commented 10 years ago

Definetly not by intention. No. This is only noticable in steamos with other os's on same hardware having improved download speeds. Possibly lan related optimisations in steamos for in home streaming have had an impact on available bandwidth or something. Just thinking/guessing out loud.

@Hellreaver , please recheck this and close if it no longer affects you. In desktop mode, open a terminal window and check the output of lsb_release -a. Ensure you are on brewmaster, as Alchemist is no longer supported. You must do a full reinstall to move to brewmaster at this time. See the wiki for details.
