Today, I installed CSGO, and when I launch it, there's a black window that closes after 7-10 seconds.
With -novid
and renaming the ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Counter-Strike Global Offensive/csgo/panorama/videos
folder, I managed to load the game to the state from the screenshots a couple of times, but immediately after that the window closed

Disabling the steam overlay for the game helped me I played one game (or rather part of it, I didn’t know that friendly fire was on and stabbed an ally, got a kick and a game search ban for half an hour), everything seems to be fine
You know what's better than CS:GO? Being able to play CS:GO! badumm-tss!
"- How do you combat toxic behaviour in CS:GO?" "- We don't let players in. No players - no toxicity." badumm-tss!
"- The game is not as stable as it used to be, sometimes unplayable. Is it because of Counter-Strike 2 promotion?" "- No, Overwatch 2 promotion." badumm-tss!
"- Why am I not able to run the game anymore?!" "- Remember that really strong headshot you received last round?" badumm-tss!
Oh my, players are remembering CS 1.6, what to do, what to do... (disables server discovery for 1.6 clients with some "very security micro patch") Whoopsie! I mean, the day is saved! badumm-tss!
"- I can't use that squeaky-clean Azimov I've just bought: the game don't run." "- Well, we can confirm that there are no issues with your purchase!" badumm-tss!
"- We have Best QA In Industry!" "- How many testers you have?" "- 1,152,959 and counting." badumm-tss!
"- I can't run this game on Linux." "- Use compatibility mode with Wine." "- But game page states that Linux is supported!" "- You've just received support with your Linux issue. No word of lies, no extra word of truth!" badumm-tss!
the problem is related with the steam overlay.
Try running the game with steam big picture
Prior to today's patch: with some effort I was able to play a bit with bots. With bad graphics, misaligned game window, etc-etc - but the game was somewhat playable.
Now: crash after black screen on game start.
I've tried too many options to make it work to list here, all futile.

@lindevel 's advice helped, by the way. Apparently, it's still difficult to bypass faulty media rendering in 2023 even if it affects absolutely nothing gameplay-wise. For the truth's sake, prior to July 21st update these background videos were rendering properly - and I don't remember any GPU driver and/or codec updates being shipped through Ubuntu's daily updates checkup...
