If you want 4:3 select "Normal" and then pick a 4:3 resolution from the options it shows you in the video tab, you should then see blackbars on the side. Make sure you don't run with "-nofbo" or low quality video mode.
Adding some more explicit UI around this is being tracked in #976
I can't select "Normal", the same result as in #486
The Normal mode appears on the drop-down list, but clicking it does nothing: the menu collapses, and it's still set to Widescreen.
Make sure you don't run with "-nofbo" or low quality video mode.
No, I'm not using low quality mode, nor '-fbo' parameter.
Did you try the fixes mentioned in #486? That bug reads as a window manager/X setup issue.
I'm using Gnome Shell with Mutter not the i3. And as I understand #486 resolved by itself. Also windowed mode works as well as fullscreen but I can't change resolution from options window (there are no other values listed except native 1600x900). For windowed mode I can set required resolution from hl.conf.
Recently I encountered issues similar to #486 and #62 on Linux. It would be great to use 4:3 ratio in full screen with letterboxing.
