Have you tried using -nofbo -width 600 -height 800
as a launch option for the game? Could you supply your system information from steam, you may have an older mesa (though gma 500 is legacy) and it should give us that info.
also try to add -forceres (undocumented)
Well, -nofbo apparently did the trick, it runs nearly fine with the exception when I look at certain things (I tried the hazard course, and as soon as i looked at the hologram it lagged away. Also what should be a performance chewer is Steam. When I played it in Wine, I used the old retail version without steam. Now I use Steam and the Steam UI lags more when using it locally than X forwarding it from my gaming rig xD
Regardless which GoldSrc game I try to play, it always wants to be at my maximum resolution (1366x768), but my netbook can't handle this. When I played it using Wine (when Steam for Linux wasnt available), it kinda was not able to do the max resolution due to some bugs, but instead it ran in 800x600, which was PERFECTLY fine for my netbook and ran pretty smooth. Now with the native build it just doesn't have that available, it's just 1366x768 or nuffin.
